How is Honey Made?
March 25th10:30 – 12:30pm
Taylor will take us from the flower to the hive to the table. In this two hour workshop we will explore the process of how the bees make honey and how humans can harvest it. Sommeliers talk about terroir when they assess the qualities of wine, and an experienced honey taster can also taste the landscape in their finished honey. How can we shape and craft the flavors of our honey? What medicines, beverages and foods can be enhanced with this magical syrup? How can we benefit from the workings of the hive without stripping their health? All these and more will be discussed.
Taylor Roman:
Taylor grew up in Frederick, spending his days exploring the woods around Lake Linganore.  This lead to a lifelong fascination and love for nature and the complex systems of life on our planet.  In college he studied ethnobotany and environmental justice, and worked with community organizations in Baltimore to create and sustain green spaces and gardens in the city.  He has lived and worked throughout Maryland as a farmer, gardener, and environmental educator.  During his transient time as a farmer, Taylor learned the basic skills of beekeeping; this experience lead to a new lifelong love, and since settling back down in Frederick he has begun to work towards a full time job as a beekeeper.
