Join us for a hands-on workshop in Fox Haven’s heritage apple and fruit tree orchard to learn the essentials of fruit tree care. This practical session will focus on pruning, grafting, and tool maintenance, equipping you with the skills needed to support healthy, productive trees.

You’ll gain an understanding of how proper pruning encourages growth and fruit production, as well as the techniques for grafting trees to preserve varieties and propagate new ones. The workshop also includes a segment on maintaining and sharpening pruning tools to ensure effective and efficient use.

The majority of the session will be outdoors in the orchard, working directly with the trees. Dress in layers and wear sturdy, comfortable shoes suitable for uneven ground.

Whether you’re starting out or looking to refine your skills, this workshop offers practical knowledge and hands-on experience to help you care for your own fruit trees.

Meet Your Teacher

Pete Walton grew up in rural Loudoun County, Virginia, where he discovered his passion for regenerative agriculture while volunteering with a grassroots urban farming community during his time at James Madison University. After a transformative semester wilderness expedition in Patagonia with the National Outdoor Leadership School, Pete committed to reconnecting people with nature through farming and food. His diverse experience spans vegetable and livestock farming at Willowsford Farm and George’s Mill Farm, managing a small tree nursery, and helping to establish the fruit orchard at Fox Haven Farm. He also helped launch the Piedmont Environmental Council’s Community Farm at Roundabout Meadows, organizing volunteer days and producing thousands of pounds of food for local food banks. Pete currently serves as a Technical Assistance Provider at Future Harvest, continuing his mission to foster connections between people, land, and sustainable agriculture.
