Meet Fox Haven’s Artist in Residency, Jillian!

Jillian Abir MacMaster is a Palestinian-American photographic artist from Frederick, Maryland. She holds a BFA in photography from Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. She utilizes fine art portraiture, cyanotype, and scanography processes to explore themes of power balances and empowerment. She mostly exhibits her work in group exhibitions in the Mid-Atlantic region and has had three solo exhibitions in Frederick, Maryland. Much like her photography work, her curatorial practice and artistic community work focuses on themes of empowerment. She curated the exhibition Infinite Growth at the Frederick Arts Council in the summer of 2022, which exhibited the works of LGBTQ+ artists from the Frederick region and beyond. She was awarded Best in Show in the Cumberland Valley Photographers Exhibition at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts in Hagerstown in 2022 and 2023. She has taught cyanotype printmaking at the Frederick Book Arts Center. More info at

About the Work

Cyanotypes are one of the oldest photographic printing processes in the history of photography. Using coated paper and light, this process creates detailed plant prints surrounded by a stunning deep blue backdrop.💙

About LandBack Tax

Beginning in 2022, Fox Haven will pay $2 from every ticket sale to the Piscataway Land Trust as a LandBack tax for the land Fox Haven inhabits. Land taxes to indigenous nations function similarly to paying rent or a home mortgage. Payments such as a mortgage provide access to living space, whereas LandBack taxes recognize our access to stolen Indigenous land.

The Piscataway Land Trust is a long-term Indigenous-led effort led by the 501(c)(3) Cedarville Band of Piscataway Indians Inc. to restore and rematriate ancestral land and sovereignty in the Chesapeake region to Piscataway and other Chesapeake Indigenous people.
